Parish History
The history of Mor Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Whangarei, is closely connected with the arrival and growth of the Malayalee community in the region. Families from Kerala, India, began to migrate to Whangarei as early as the year 2000, bringing with them their rich cultural heritage and strong Christian faith. Over the years, the number of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox faithful gradually increased, and the longing for a dedicated place of worship in their own tradition grew stronger.
In 2008, this dream took shape with the formal establishment of the parish. The church was founded in the name of our Patron Saint, Mor Geevarghese Gregorios, affectionately known as Parumala Thirumeni, the first canonized saint of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church. His life of prayer, humility, and service continues to inspire our parish family.
The initial steps toward starting the parish were taken by a small but dedicated group of faithful: Alwin, Shyju Eapen and Ashanth, Joshi Chennakkaden and Rini, Eldhos and Jerly, Sonal Issac, and Claudia Paul. These founding members met regularly for prayer and fellowship, laying the groundwork for the formation of the parish. Their vision, commitment, and unity in faith created the foundation on which the church stands today. Today, the parish has grown to include more than 25 families, united in worship and service. The church remains strong and active, continuing the mission begun by its founders. Together, they look forward with hope to many more years of faith, fellowship, and growth.
Founder Vicar
The Founder Vicar, Rev. Dr. Joseph Zachariah Maramkandam Cor-Episcopa, played a vital role in guiding and organizing the parish in its early days. His spiritual leadership and pastoral care strengthened the bonds among the members and established a firm spiritual direction for the community. In later years, the church was blessed with the ministry of Fr. Robin Daniel M and Fr. Manu Parakkal, who each served as Vicars and contributed to the parish’s growth, worship life, and outreach.
The parish continues its journey of faith under the current leadership of Fr. Sijo Kallarackal Varghese, who provides spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and leadership in various ministries. Over the years, the church has become more than just a place of worship — it is a spiritual home, a family in Christ, and a center for prayer, fellowship, and service in the Whangarei region.
From its humble beginnings in the hearts and homes of a few faithful families, Mor Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church has grown into a vibrant community of believers. Guided by the prayers of Parumala Thirumeni and the grace of God, the parish looks forward to continuing its mission of witnessing Christ’s love in Northland, New Zealand, for generations to come.
